Comments:

Motto: "Equity knows no difference of sex. The law of equal freedom applies to the whole race-female as well as male"--Herbert Spencer.
As noted by Luddy and others, this was "the first attempt at creating a forum for public debate on the subject [of women's suffrage in Ireland]" (269).
"It is a reproach to our Metropolis that the claims of women to a more positive legal status have not received a cordial recognition from our Press...We put this query frankly to every candid Irishman; is it right that women should be denied all participation in the blessings of self-government, because a few enthusiasts in the United States have been too emphatic in the assertion of their equality with men? This appears to be the substance of the issue between us" (Women's Suffrage, no 1, p.1).
This women's magazine contains articles and essays on women's equality written by women. It is stated that "The Women's Advocate is intended to appear occasionally, at irregular intervals, according as circumstances may permit" (To correspondents, p.8).
A librarian has written "discontinued" on the July 1874 number.
It is uncertain if this was also published in England. Anna Haslam, soon after, helped found Dublin Women's Suffrage Association (see Irish Women's Suffrage and Local Government Association).
This title "targeted a female readership while appealing to male 'chivalry' to assist women in winning the vote" (Tusan 81).
