Comments:

"Biographical" information. (Layton)
"That journal [The Catholic Times] is not only a messenger of Catholic news, but a large portion of its space is devoted to the light and instructive literature which is the leading feature of THE CATHOLIC FIRESIDE. Every week it [The Catholic Times] gives three or four columns of a serial tale from the pen of an able writer, and, besides this, its Naturalist's column, its Family reading, and its 'Sparks', features never, under any circumstances, emitted from its pages, are ample to fill up the time between one monthly visit of THE FIRESIDE and another. The latter is, indeed, a monthly supplement to the former, and we hope our readers will regard them as inseparable companions" (1:2, p.18).
The subtitle "a family journal" was added vol 5 no 1 and dropped by vol 6.
"To the clergy and teachers, and all who are desirous of promoting the circulation of Popular Catholic Literature among our people, we especially appeal for help in our efforts to supersede the cheap, sensational thrash which is poisoning the minds and perverting the hearts of our youth. Schoolmasters and Schoolmistresses can aid us in this good work by encouraging and recommending their scholars to purchase the CATHOLIC FIRESIDE" (To Our Readers, 6:1 ns p.14).
This periodical is a monthly supplement to The Catholic Times.
Advertised in Successful Advertising in 1902 as the "most widely circulated Catholic weekly in the world" (513).
