The aim of the journal is summed up in the following excerpt from the "Preface": "It is the earnest desire of the writer that all persons into whose hands this book may fall will read it thoughtfully, act on the suggestions it contains, and if not total abstainers from alcoholic liquors and tobacco, already, that they shall be persuaded to become such at once; that they will recommend the book to all their friends and acquaintances, and thus persuade them to become total abstainers also" (1:1, 1890).
