Comments:

"There are now dozens of journals which have to do with the dressing and adornment of the body; but, strange to say, there is not one dealing exclusively or specially with the dressing of the house. It is true that some of the papers which are written for gentlewomen usually contain a few columns bearing upon artistry in the home, but such suggestions are mostly kept quite subsidiary to 'the latest fashions from Paris.' Believing that the House is fully entitled to an organ of its own, we essay in this new monthly to represent, by pen and pencil, its varied interests. Assisting those who beautify and manage the home, we shall hope to largely increase both its usefulness and its pleasure-giving powers.... Under 'Furnishing' we shall discuss, not only the needs of those who are about to 'set up housekeeping,' but also the aspirations of such as are constantly striving to add to the character and adornment of their household surroundings. Chapters on 'The Home Artistic,' 'How to judge Old Furniture,' 'Glimpses of Good Houses,' 'Rooms worth Remembering,' and 'The Pick of the Showrooms,' will aim at covering the whole ground of domestic wood-work and upholstery.... Turning to the lighter side of domestic life, 'Art for the Needle' will be supplied and explained; 'Fads and Handiwork' will have a prominent place; and 'The Domestic Workshop' will be made a corner of the greatest interest to those who have the wisdom to set up a bench in the house" (Our Raison D'ĂȘtre 1:1, p.1).
"At the end of the current year this journal will pass out of our hands into those of Mrs. Ernest Hart, who will edit the paper herself. While preserving the present characteristics of the journal, as the organ and exponent of Home Arts and Crafts, Mrs. Hart intends to add many new features, and to make it more truly representative of all the various interests centred in the house" (Our Future 14:82, p.1).
Variant subtitle: "the journal of home arts and crafts."
