Comments:

Cronin quotes its strongly worded objective of "'exhibiting the principles and progress of Christ's kingdom, and exposing errors and abominations of that section of the rival Kingdom of Antichrist, commonly called the papacy.'"
Its subscribers paid in advance, originally paying 4s, which was later raised to 5s annually.
This was one of two Irish Church publications that continued after disestablishment (Altholz 43). Altholz later claims that an Achill Missionary Magazine was an Anglican publication that aimed to "convert Irish Catholics as if they had been heathen" (52). However, it is uncertain whether he is referring to the same paper.
Nangle wanted William Johnston, a key voice of the Orangemen in Ulster publishing, to edit the paper, but Johnston, despite his admiration for Nangle, declined (McClelland 12).
Nangle's own views against Catholicism worked their way into his printing and, as the owner of a printing press, he was able to disseminate these views easily.
Altholz says that this publication, "at first quite crude, grew in importance as it became the spearhead of a Protestant crusade in Ireland" (21).
Circulated throughout the United Kingdom, Paris, Bourdeaux, Brussels, New Zealand, Van Dieman's Land, Calcutta, Madras, China, New York, Quebec. Printed at Dugort, Achill; volume for 1868 printed in Dublin. After the title change in 1870 to The Irish Church Advocate and Achill Missionary Herald, there was a reduction in subscription cost and extended circulation.
"In April 1838 Dublin University Magazine, a prosperous Tory periodical whose literary merits even its political opponents admitted, accused the government of refusing the Achill Missionary Herald the usual press postage facilities (on the grounds that it was not a newspaper) for political reasons. But this was the first attempt, the writer admitted, 'to carry out the despotic principles of whiggery to the extent of a censorship of the press'" (Inglis, p. 210).
Colindale lists title changes and issue numbers as follows: The Irish Advocate and Achill Missionary Herald no 445- 452 (01 Aug 1874-01 Mar 1875); The Irish Advocate and Missionary Herald no 453-461 (01 Apr-01 Dec 1875); The Irish Church Advocate vol 1:1-3:43 2s (01 Jan 1876-01 Jul 1879); The Church Advocate vol 3:44-14:190 (01 Aug 1879-15 Nov 1891). These dates conflict with Brown who suggests that The Irish Church Advocate and Achill Missionary Herald ran from 1868 - 1897: "The word Achill was later dropped from the title. That is vols. xxxi-xxxvi of The Achill Missionary Herald, ed. Nangle. In 1876 a new series began."
Issues no 1-384 in Colindale are listed under Achill Island; no 445-vol 14:190 are listed under Dublin.
