"The only Irish humour paper existing."
"Zozimus" was a popular name for Michael Moran, a famous Dublin ballad singer. The name derives from Moran's favorite recitation Dr. Coyle's "Life of St. Mary of Egypt" which discussed a priest named Zozimus who found Mary, who spent 47 years doing penance in the desert (Wall 101).
A new series was announced for 04 Nov 1871. In Oct. 1871, it was taken away from Sullivan by Dowling and O'Hea and kept alive until Aug 1872. Notice of discontinuation was given in issue of 14 Oct 1871 for 28 Oct 1871, but termination actually occurred 31 Aug 1872.
According to IBL, there were 120 issues.
Artist-in-chief: J.F. O'Hea. Dowling, after editing Sullivan's War Sheet Daily Summary, was assigned to edit Zozimus.
Prospectus of new series: "To bring home amusement to all [and to provoke a] merry laugh... without their finding... anything offensive to their political susceptibilities. It has, therefore, been decided to regard political questions & events with the strictest impartiality."
"Zozimus was founded by A.M Sullivan of the Nation. Richard Dowling and John F. O'Hea took over the journal from Sullivan in 1871. One of the best early Irish comic papers, it attained a high artistic and literary standard" (McKenna 42).
"In Zozimus, in passing, we may salute the numerous and important band of makers and singers and printers of ballads which sang the praises of J.K.L., Fr. Tom Maguire, Daniel O'Connell, and other Catholic champions; and did an inestimable amount to strengthen popular Catholic morale especially in Dublin" (Wall 102).
The issue for Dec 9 1871 advertises an upcoming Christmas Number, to be published Wed Dec 20. It also incorporated a Zozimus Annual as noted in the issue of Dec 23, 1871 (vol 1 ns, 85).
