Comments:

Motto: "The Oldest Photography Journal in the World" (1950).
"The Liverpool Photographic Society, in putting forth a Journal of their own, rest their claims to public support upon the widely extending interest in the several branches of Photographic art the daily progress that is being made by the practical members of their own Society, and other Photographers elsewhere. The admirers of the art naturally desire to have more particulars, and the practical operators more full and precise records of the suggestions, experiments, and successes in various parts of the world, than can possible be afforded by a newspaper devoted to general information....The Liverpool Society have therefore deemed it expedient to have a Journal of their own, commencing with the report of the first meeting in the new year....The Proceedings of the London Society, and of independent operators at home and abroad will be given, with everything that can be obtained to furnish our readers with a complete account of the state and progress of the art in all its various branches" (Address 1:1, p.1).
"It was our duty, in the last number, to announce a change in the editorial management of this Journal; and it now devolves upon us to inform our readers of an alteration in the title. In our new career, the name of MANCHESTER will be associated with that of Liverpool on the title page, arrangements being in progress for constituting this Journal the recognised organ of official organ...of Manchester, would be a source of gratification to any Journal....We hope, in our next, to be able to state that the Manchester Photographic Society, at their meeting on the 7th inst., have officially ratified the above announcement" (no 1[2s] Jan 1857 p1).
"The constantly increasing popularity of our fascinating art, together with the continually extending range of our official representation, compels us to forego a designation that implies local restriction; but it would be a matter of extreme regret to us, to interrupt, even in appearance, the friendly relations that have always existed between us and the Photographic Societies of Liverpool and Manchester; we shall make the now necessary change of name as slight as possible, and appear on the 1st January, 1859, as The Photographic Journal: the special organ of the Liverpool and Manchester organ of the Liverpool and Manchester Photographic Societies, and North London and Chorlton Photographic Associations; but in order to obviate any confusion by a re-duplication of numbers, and bearing in mind that we shall be entering on the sixth year of our existence, we purpose continuing the numerical series from the original establishment of the Journal five years ago" (2:21[1s] 15 Dec 1858).
A monthly supplement to the British Journal of Photography was published entitled The Lantern Record (1899).
"This journal, established for the advancement of the Photographic Art, is the organ of all leading British and Foreign Photographic Societies. Its contributors embrace the names of the most eminent writers on the Art-Science of Photography. It contains full reports of the meetings of all photographic societies; its columns are replete with interesting details both for the amateur and professional" (Mitchell's, 1900).
Conducted by the Liverpool Photographic Society in 1854 - 1858.
